LeafCutter partnering with AntFarm’s Community Wildfire Defense Program

ArboReady Crew Members participate in an 8-week paid training and fieldwork program designed to prepare rural young adults (ages 18-25) for careers in arboriculture, utility line-clearance, wildfire mitigation, and related green-sector jobs. Crew Members work in small teams to complete hands-on vegetation management, hazard assessment, pruning, and fuels reduction work on private and public properties in Clackamas County.

Participants receive technical instruction, industry-recognized certifications, and exposure to multiple career pathways, including PGE Line Arborist contractors, NW Line JATC apprenticeships, and professional tree care companies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a 4-6 person ArboReady crew to complete vegetation management, pruning, small-tree removals, and defensible space work.
  • Support arboriculture field tasks such as limb removal, brush hauling, bucking, chipping, basic rigging, and work-zone setup.
  • Conduct wildfire risk assessments and assist with developing defensible space around homes in rural and high-risk areas.
  • Operate hand tools and power equipment safely, including chainsaws, pole saws, loppers, chippers, and other vegetation-management tools.
  • Perform daily inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment, tools, and work vehicles.
  • Uphold an exceptional standard for safety by following all training, PPE protocols, and job hazard analyses.
  • Participate in classroom instruction covering chainsaw operation (S-212), tree biology, species identification, basic climbing and rigging principles, emergency response, CPR/First Aid, and Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) concepts.
  • Engage professionally with staff, homeowners, industry partners, and guest instructors during trainings and site visits.
  • Demonstrate reliability, teamwork, leadership growth, and a willingness to learn advanced arborist skills.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and perform physically demanding work in variable weather and terrain.
  • Ability to work cooperatively on a crew, follow directions, and maintain focus in high-risk environments.
  • Commitment to completing all program components, including classroom instruction, fieldwork, and safety evaluations.
Preferred:
  • Prior experience in forestry, wildfire mitigation, or tree-care industry.
  • Chainsaw operations experience or formal training (S-212).
  • Wildland fire experience (RED Card, FFT2, or similar).
  • USFS Chainsaw Certification (A or B Sawyer/FAL1–FAL2).
  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR).
  • Interest in pursuing arborist certifications, line-clearance work, or NW Line JATC pathways.

Training Provided (No Prior Experience Required):

ArboReady Crew Members will receive paid training in:
  • Chainsaw operation, sharpening, and maintenance
  • Felling and bucking fundamentals
  • Pruning cuts and brush management
  • Climbing and basic rigging (introductory)
  • Wildfire behavior and Home Ignition Zone assessment
  • Utility safety awareness and vegetation-clearance principles
  • First Aid/CPR and emergency response
  • Workplace professionalism and job-readiness skills
  • Career navigation and industry pathway exploration

Participants who complete the program may be eligible for placement on AntFarm’s CWDP Wildfire Mitigation Crews or referral to partner arborist contractors, apprenticeship programs, or community college pathways.

Pay: $18/hour
Schedule: Mon-Thurs, 8-10 hour days
